16 channel Digital Recording

We have over 40 years of experience in Music, Audio engineer, Recording Engineer, and Video production. We offer you state of the art technology and Experience to produce your project on a tight budget.

We specialize in recording live events such as rock concerts and other as it happens events.   With the DAW and gear we use to record you would think it was recorded in a Studio costing much much more.  We are located in the Central area of Minnesota and we can travel to your event and record it for you.

We carry state of the art digital recording equipment.  We use state of the Art editing and mixing software.  With the Roland digital audio recording equipment we can record up to 16 channels all at once.  Perfect for live concert recording.  We provide a great service at a great price.   We give you WAV files, on a DVD, which can be used by ANY sound, and video editing software.

Our Prices are very competitive. One recording studio in the Minnesota market charges $75 an hour just for the gear, not to mention the tech.  We charge a flat fee to record your show or event of only $150 (per hour long set).  Not only that but if you book us for more than one set we will give a discount for each additional hour.  We also have competitive rates for mixing and mastering.  Most studios require you to purchase a Block of studio time.  This can run into the thousands of dollars to record and mix your CD.  We can do the same and do it for less.  No minimum requirement for studio time and reasonable rates for the mixing and mastering that we do.  All without sacrificing the quality of the production.

Here are a few samples We Recorded, Mixed, and or Mastered.

The Rockford Mules – Ma They Broke Me – LIVE

The Tisdales – Anything You Want To – LIVE

The Petty Demons – Caramel Chameleon LIVE

The Rockford Mules bring a unique southern rock sound to the local scene, and do it in style. With a couple great LP’s to their credit now, live is really where these guys shine brightest. With an energy and sound that is hard to match, a live performance by the Mules is something just about anyone who appreciates good music will love.
We have recorded The Rockford Mules on a couple of occasions. This track is taken from a performance at Cause Spirits and Soundbar in Minneapolis on April 10th 2010, and is the title track to their latest LP entitled- Ma, They Broke Me.
Give it a listen and then go see these guys live somewhere. This is one of those bands that you can guarantee will be worth the cover.

The Rockford Mules Ma They Broke Me LIVE

Lead by Rich Mattson and Tony Derrick, like the phoenix, The Tisdales were born from the ashes of two other Minnesota indie bands, Hotel Coral Essex and the Minneapolis Icon Ol’ Yeller. The sound they came out with is a unique blend of punk/pop/twang, and always provides a lot of fun for the crowd.
Slippery Wrench Productions had the chance to record The Tisdales at their fun little romp, pre-CD release show at the 501 Club in downtown Minneapolis and again at the Out With The New CD-release party at Cause Spirit And Soundbar in Uptown. In classic fashion they came out and blew the house down with their loud expressive music spawned and mastered on the Iron Range in northern Minnesota. While it was hard to decide which of the great songs to master and put up we finally decided on this, all giving version of Anything You Want To.
We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as the crowd at the bar and as we enjoyed recording, mixing and mastering it! If you get the chance to see these guys live, it’s worth the time, guaranteed.

Anything You Want To – LIVE

Slippery Wrench was lucky enough to get a chance to record two great bands at the venerable 501 Club before it’s final act. Sorry to see a good local indie bar not be able to make it, even after some great improvements in separating the sound-stage area bar from the upper bar. Unfortunately, the short lived 501 Club leaves us only with some fond memories now.
One of the top notch local bands we recorded at the 501 before its demise was The Petty Demons , on February 19th 2010. Lead man Aaron Seymour brings his classic Delilahs witty lyrics and sound to the front in this, happy-tempo’d off center Minneapolis prog rock song- Caramel Chameleon.

A stage shot at the Artists Quarter in St Paul MN

Johnson, Bland and Tona jam

It came as a short notice gig but turned out to be a great show.  On Friday Oct 8 and Sat Oct 9 we recorded three of the greatest musicians we have had the honor to record.

Jef Lee Johnson, Michael Bland and bass player Yohannes Tona jamed at the Artist Quarter in St Paul MN.

Jef Lee Johnson

Jef Lee Johnson

Jef Lee Johnson is one of those rare musicians who ‘gets it!’ He knows how to make the music take flight-’to go where no man has gone before.’ Besides being a truly adventurous guitarist, he’s also an outstanding composer, bass and keyboard player; blending his roots in Blues and Funk, with his love and understanding of

Jazz and Latin Music. In other words, he’s done his homework.  Jef Lee Johnson is a Philadelphia-based guitarist who is as fearless and innovative as they come.  His big-time credits include session work for the likes of Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel and McCoy Tyner, and he even had a stint in Paul Shaffer’s band on “Letterman.” But he is also capable of creating highly experimental guitar inventions that will drop your jaw.

Chaka Khan called him “a gift from God” and D’Angelo called him “the Hendrix of our generation.”

ImageBassist Yohannes Tona hails from Ethiopia, but in a short time has made a big impact on the Twin Cities music scene, playing with artists including Nachito Herrera and Stokely Williams.

Michael Bland

Michael Bland

The powerful drummer Michael Bland is internationally recognized as a long-time force with Prince. His list of credits covers acts as varied as George Benson and Soul Asylum

We are really honored to have been able to record them some of the sweetest tracks we have been a part of.

We have added two ART-S8 active splitters to our list of gear for recording.  This Isolates us from the rest of the PA system totally.  With a direct out that goes to the FOH, and another out that leads to our DAW recording gear there is no possible way for anything we do to effect the House Sound system.

The ART S8 can be used to split eight balanced low impedance microphone signals into sixteen balanced low impedance microphone signals (eight pairs).
Each channel of the S8 provides one direct output and one transformer isolated output from a single microphone. Applications include sending the direct outputs to the main or Front-of-House mixer, and the second isolated outputs being sent to a monitor or recording mixer. The direct outputs pass phantom power from the main mixer to the microphones for use with condenser microphones.
The S8 includes a ground-lift switch on each isolated output to reduce noise due to ground loops between connected equipment. For versatility the S8 also features an attenuator pad switch on each input that can be used to connect preamplified signals to the two microphone-level outputs on each channel. Typical preamplified signals would originate from instrument preamplifiers, mixers, keyboards, et cetera.
Features:
* Ideal solution for splitting microphone sources to feed multiple mixing consoles
* Fully transformer isolated
* Passes phantom power from main mixer
* Individual ground lift on each channel
* Individual pad switch on each channel

As we continue to grow we will continue to add gear so that we remain the best source for Live Recording.

We are now TOTALLY DIGITAL in our mixing and mastering.  With the Addition of Sonar (Cakewalk) and also Pro-Tools (both industry leading software for mixing and mastering) we are now producing totally digital recordings from start to finish.

This of course means we are re-mixing our past mixes we have done with our DAW with the new DAW’s.  Why? Well the software offers so many more features that were much needed in our recorder.  We still use the DAW recording for recording so nothing has changed on that end, just that now we are mixing in a totally digital environment.  Our recording setup is still top of the line when it comes to recording, excellent pre’s excellent A-D converters that can’t be beat and record 16 channels at a time.  As you will soon see it just means that our mixes are turning out much nicer.

We have recorded the Tisdales, the first one was OK but not the best, the second  WOW… so we made a MP3 Sample for you to listen to of the mix of one of their hits  Lovin Arms Of Life.  This is a really cool song and I am sure you will enjoy it!!…

The Tisdales – Lovin Arms of Life

We also have recorded the Rockford Mules and have a new mix of one of their hits available as well.  If your not familiar with this really popular Twin Cities band your in for a real treat.  THEY ROCK… and we have a sample of one of their hits Step Aside Son for you to sample and enjoy.

The Rockford Mules – Step Aside Son

Keep ROCKING, we are!!!  Look for more samples to come and find us on FACEBOOK, Slippery Wrench search should find us.

We were lucky to be invited to record at Sauce Spirit and Sound Bar on May 16th 2010 for the Lyn-Lake after party show.  Consisting of 6 bands and starting at 7pm it was a rocking good evening.

We were lucky to be able to record the following artists.  Har Mar Superstar, Grant Hart, The Rockford Mules, The Millionth Mile, Chooglin, and Communist Daughter.

Working with our gear made it so easy to record nearly 7 hours of music in a single shot it is simply amazing.

It continues to amaze us at the quality of the recording and the bands that we are getting a chance to work with.

We were once again at Sauce Spirit & Sound Bar last nite, April 301th, to record the Tisdales and their CD Release party.

Opening act was the Hard Left a driving band that was perfect to kick off the nite.  Followed closely by High on Stress another up and rising band.

The Tisdales, ripped the place apart as they played their own unique style of music.  A mixture of some of their other songs and their new songs made for a great show and excellent recording.  Look for new samples of the Tisdales and maybe even the other bands we recorded last nite as we mix and master them to finished tracks.

If your in Minnesota or Wisconsin and your looking for a HIGH quality recording of a live event such as a concert you will not go wrong with our services.  We offer affordable live recording of concerts, shows or other events for the Indie music scene.

Many have wondered how it is that we set up our gear and while words can explain it, a picture is worth a thousand words so here without a thousand words is a simplified picture of how we set up.

How we set up

Our setup

While we are tied into the PA system, we are independent of the PA.  We draw our mic signals from the stage not the PA gear.  Now this simplified picture only shows 4 mics we can record upto 16 at a time.  Normally we will try to add overhead mics on the drum kit and also an ambient mic to catch the crowd.    Most bands use a 4 or 5 drum kit mic set, 1-2 guitars, a bass, 3-4 vocals, maybe keyboards, which takes up around 13 channels leaving plenty for us to add our extra’s.  We can use Phantom power or supply it as well on a channel by channel basis as needed.  This also reduces the chance for interference with the PA system.
